The 12th of June is the Philippines’ Independence Day!

To celebrate this day, The Rising Youth (TRY) brought a few beneficiaries of the residential program to attend the flag raising ceremony in Rizal park.

TRY is led and managed by the youth themselves. They elected officers who gathered for general assembly twice a month last year. Their mission is to become responsible young adults that give back by sharing their talents and skills for a better future.

Together with the staff of the Magellan Learning Center (MLC) and the Independent living program (ILP), the youth wanted to commemorate the history of the Philippines and educate younger children. This is also to ignite nationalism to the young ones. The main celebration of the Independence Day happened at Rizal Park, where Vice President Leni Robredo graced the flag raising ceremony at the Rizal Monument and laid a wreath at the tomb of national hero Jose Rizal.

This year is the country’s 121st celebration of independence from Spain. While José Rizal’s death in December 1896 initiated a movement of nationalism and political consciousness, the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain was proclaimed on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.

Since then, the government commemorates this day with celebrations and national events.
