Virlanie Children's Choir

Participation in musical activities gives the children of the Virlanie Foundation opportunities for learning, creativity, artistic expression and healing which are significant in their growth and development. It boosts their self-esteem when they learn and perform a song.

Virlanie Children’s Choir formed in August 2004 to sing at a benefit dinner in honor of Princess Caroline of Hanover. The Choir's performance surpassed all expectations! The children asked to be allowed to continue their singing with the support of the Foundation.

“I was invited by a friend from CCP to organize the Virlanie Children’s Choir to perform during Princess Caroline’s visit to the Philippines. What started as a one-time project became a regular activity [that] I consider an opportunity to exercise my social responsibility to the less privileged. It is an honor to contribute in whatever small way towards realization of goals set by Virlanie Foundation. I am humbled by the nobility of the Foundation’s mission and the simplicity and warmth of the children despite their previous deprivations.

 -Ma. Lourdes Hermo, Choir Master

The original Choir was composed of 26 children. Over the years, some members left - reunited with their families.  The Choir is currently composed of 18 singers: children from the Virlanie Homes and but also from the poor communities with which the Foundation is working.

Since then, the Choir has sung at one or two major events per year, for charity events, royalty and UN organizations.

  • In 2008, the choir sang at the Children’s Festival at the Museo ng Kabataan and at Virlanie’s Somebody, Someday concert with Virlanie’s ambassador Billy Crawford.
  • On May 10, 2009, they performed at Philamlife Theater in Manila for the Madz Et Al Festival hosted by Phil- Am Life and General Insurance Company and the Philippine Madrigal Singers.
  • The choir was also featured by GMA-7’s Jessica Soho in her popular Filipino TV documentary Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho. Korina Sanchez of ABS CBN News Channel featured them in her top-rating TV program Korina Today on the topic: the sounds of Christmas.
  • On the occasion of Virlanie’s 17th anniversary, the choir finished the recording of its first CD with 11 songs. The recording was made possible through the Jesuit Communication Recording Studio of Ateneo de Manila University and CBROOMS MUSICERS. The songs includes: Filipino folksongs, Broadway songs and inspirational songs.

During the Christmas season, the Virlanie Children’s Choir sings in private homes and in company offices.
