Our Campaigns

“Rice up!” for street children

The "Rice up" campaign is closed but Virlanie Foundation still needs your help to provide its 12 Homes for street children with basic necessities: foodstuff, toiletries, cleaning products, equipements...You may drop your donations at our head office and also visit one of the Homes and meet the children.

"Rice Up!" is a campaign aimed at providing rice - the Filipino staple food - to street children.

Virlanie Foundation invites the public to donate 50 sacks of rice per month so that it can provide 400 disadvantaged children with 3 meals every day. Through its Mobile Unit and the Open Day Center, Virlanie provides meals to an average of 140 children every day.  Apart from this, Virlanie Homes shelters more than 450 children in one year.

The campaign runs from October 17 to November 30, 2011. It is launched in conjunction with National Children's Month.

Virlanie has several activities and events lined up for the month like the Friendly Football Match on October 22 and participates in an art contest hosted by the Committee on Children in Poverty in Urban Areas on October 29.

For the right to food, “Rice up!”

The right to food is a basic human right as declared by the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 (Art. 25). However, this right is not fully vested to all Filipinos. According to a recent report made by UNICEF, one in 3 children under 5 years old suffers from severe malnutrition in the Philippines. Malnutrition is the cause of half of the deaths among children in the Philippines.

Virlanie Foundation, which looks after disadvantaged children, ensures that beneficiaries are provided with three balanced meals a day. Furthermore, Virlanie reaches out to disadvantaged children in poor communities in Divisoria through its Mobile Unit and through its Open Day Center in Quiapo. In 2010 alone, the Mobile Unit was able to provide 8,800 meals to street children in Divisoria.

Why rice is so important to children

Rice contains over 15 vitamins and minerals, and unlike other high carbohydrate foods, rice contains high quality proteins.  Rice also contains all 8 of the essential amino acids, which helps in building and maintaining muscle tissue, antibodies and hormones.  Above all, rice is a crucial component to Filipino food culture, just as a family atmosphere is important to a happy child.
